Our latest coffee was produced around the Murambi Hill area which is located about 1.5 km from the Migoti washing station and has an average elevation of 1800 masl. The name “Murambi” is translated as “one who lives long.”

Origin: Burundi (Murambi Hill)
Processing method: Fully Washed and Sundried
Altitude: 1800 masl
Varietal: Bourbon

This Tanzanian coffee is from an old coffee estate on the outer slopes of Ngorongoro Crater; a dramatic and wild landscape with lots of shade, allowing the coffee to develop slowly and create lots of natural sugars! We can testify that it is BEAUTIFUL!

It gives us great joy to welcome @megzo15 to the Gegrond family.

Get to know Megan:

A young Megan was happiest being outdoors with her feet in the sand. Since then, she dreamed of becoming a surfer girl from Gauteng and labelled herself as a Hipster. This notion has not changed as time passed.

Halfway through medical school, Megan realised that great coffee saves lives too and has since dedicated herself to saving lives, one cup at a time.

Outside of Gegrond, you will find Megan being fiercely competitive on a sports field, supporting her beloved Arsenal Football club or surfing at Elandsbaai. The final touch would be her racking up wins in Call of Duty and nourishing her soul through Cortado’s on her Breville coffee machine.

@grahamtweetbird is one of the masterminds behind the official @dgtrun . With a long history of international adventure racing and over 10 years of experience in race organising, he recognised the potential of the Grand Traverse to bring together hikers, trail runners and adventure addicts in a single event. Graham completed his own DGT trek with fellow adventure racers in November 2014 in 78 hours 58 min and is excited to offer this opportunity to many more athletes in November!

Also, Graham is one of the biggest coffee addicts you'll ever meet. He carries ground coffee, @aeropress, @jetboil and cream (yes, fresh cream...) up into the mountains not just to take photos (in fact he takes very few, if any photos) but because he cannot go without his multiple daily caffeine fixes!

Have you used or seen the Kalita Wave? This drippe

Have you used or seen the Kalita Wave? This dripper makes for a clean cup 🤤 and has much of the same advantages as the Chemex or V60.

While similar to the Chemex or V60, the Kalita Wave has a different extraction configuration. Rather than water dripping through a singular hole, it features a flat bottom with three extraction holes. According to an article by Perfect Daily Grind this eliminates any water channelling in the coffee bed, resulting in an extremely crisp cup. The dripper also has minimal contact with the filter, allowing for consistency in temperature and even dispersion of water.

We found that, compared to the v60, it is easier to get consistency when brewing larger batches. 🚧 the filter paper can easily be bent out of shape so keep them safe when taking them along on your next adventure.

@amriwilliamson made her debut on the ultra trail scene with her 2021 win at Ultra Trail Drakensberg. But she's been toughing things out in the wild for much longer than that! At age 21 she joined SA's National Defence Force. Having survived that she continued to test her limits with endurance running, cycling and triathlon, spending her limited free time enjoying the solitude of hiking and camping.

Does the question "Why @dgtrun?" really need an answer?

So, why coffee? "Coffee is probably the thing I miss the most when out for long hours... Coffee flavoured gels just don't cut it! I actually suffered from caffeine withdrawal symptoms on my first adventure race. To me, a bad day WITH coffee is better than any day without it!"

Conrad van den Berg is one of few athletes who's had the courage to sign up for the inaugural 2022 Drakensberg Grand Traverse 210km ultra trail run. (@dgtrun)

@mountain_abandon caught up with him at the 2nd training camp to find out more about his love for coffee and adventure!

This what Conrad had to say:

"I've been given an able body, fellow human beings and a beautiful earth, and what joy to combine these in exertion, togetherness and exploration! I took up road running about 40 years ago for health reasons. But through training with ex-adventure racer Banie, who is also my DGT Run partner, our distances increased and the terrain became more rugged and remote. DGT Run aligns perfectly with our chosen path of adventure, simultaneously intimidating and inviting, more of a challenge than anything we've ever done before. My wife Penny and I sat down for our daily mid-morning coffee. This routine calls each of us away from our busy-ness, to relax and talk about anything. Anything from the weather to more serious matters, like a crazy new adventure I have in mind... Fortunately, there's nothing like sharing great coffee to calm nerves and ease into a difficult conversation!"
